Trees of Hope Donor Story

– DUNNVILLE COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER FOR TREES OF HOPE –

It’s the community, businesses and individuals like Kathleen Corey, who are the heart of Dunnville Hospital & Healthcare Foundation’s (DHHF) Trees of Hope campaign, which together raised an incredible $114,836 between November 1 and December 31. When Kathleen received her Trees of Hope flyer, she wanted to donate in memory of her father, Shawn Corey, and in honour of the many memories her family have at Haldimand War Memorial Hospital.

After asking a few friends, her idea blossomed to come together and raise $1000 to buy a star in memory of her father. Many of her friends and family wanted to help, Kathleen says, “I was overwhelmed with how many people my father had touched in his life. We lost our fight not very long after Christmas. And therefore, it was fitting to donate in the spirit of the holidays and in the time, we had to say goodbye. His memory lives on in each and every one of us.”

Kathleen holds the Haldimand War Memorial Hospital close, after her father was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer, the Hamilton General released him back to Haldimand War Memorial Hospital so he could be closer to family. Kathleen is grateful for the care they received, she reminisces, “The staff at Dunnville hospital were amazing at helping us and taking the best care of him in his greatest time of need. He always was happiest after tub time or when we were allowed to bring his furry friends to see him.”

All of the proceeds from the Trees of Hope campaign support a new Emergency Department at Haldimand War Memorial. When asked why she is so passionate about supporting the hospital, Kathleen said, “We are all very excited to help support a new Emergency Department, as we all have frequented there many times, and I personally couldn’t imagine having to travel to receive help. Supporting our Hospital is the least we can do to give back to the amazing staff that have stitched up almost all of us, at one point or another.”

DHHF is very grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of kindness and generosity over the holiday season. The holiday season is truly more than a season, it’s a feeling, and every donation large and small, silently testified to the magic of the season. DHHF would like to thank everyone who supported the Trees of Hope campaign and giving a gift that will keep giving for many generations.
